Thoroughbred racehorses are some of the best cared for animals in our country.  It is no surprise that horseracing is the second largest spectator sport in our country and the largest sporting employer, with over 85,000 people employed within the industry in more than 200 different careers.

Horses are perhaps some of the most beautiful animals in the world and that is why so many people want to work with them.  So, if looking after animals or horses is your number one career choice read on to see the many opportunities and career paths available in the racing industry!

If you have never had the chance to learn to ride, don’t worry; in the racing industry we have specialist training colleges that can teach you to do that, either after GCSEs or A Levels. There are also many jobs caring for horses that don’t require you to be able to ride at all.  Take Stud Grooms for example, they care for the mares (the mums) and their foals (the baby horses) daily, ensuring that they are all safe and comfortable. They are also responsible for handling the stallions on the stud and watching the mares that are in foal during the day and overnight, to make certain that there is someone available to call a vet if needed or to birth the foal when the mare is in labour. To do this job you would need training in how to handle the horses and look after them as they grow up.  It’s a very rewarding job as it plays a big role in the future of young horses, and you get to experience their life from birth to adult. And who knows – maybe one day you might see them win at a racecourse too.

However, if riding the horses is your passion, or if you fancy giving it a try, working as a Racing Groom could be just the thing for you.  A Racing Groom will care for the racehorses on a daily basis, grooming them, feeding them and mucking out their stables.  Racing Groom’s will also ride up to 4 horses a day, both in riding arenas and on riding tracks called ‘gallops’.  Then, washing horses down after they have been ridden and putting them under the solarium to dry off, to relax their muscles.  Horses can also go in special swimming pools for exercise, which helps to build up their muscles and stamina. This is an amazing experience to see and for big animals, they are pretty good swimmers and really enjoy it!

But not all careers in this industry are practical! If you are passionate about horseracing but don’t fancy a hands-on career, there are many office-based jobs available in this industry in areas such as marketing, administration, sales and media.

So, if you want to work with animals and want to do something a bit out of the ordinary, then you need to take a look at the many training opportunities available to you.  There are two specialist training colleges for you to choose from.  The National Horseracing College in Doncaster, and the British Racing School in Newmarket.  They both offer a residential foundation course in Racehorse care, and other routes in, if you are looking for a career change.  Once you have successfully completed your foundation course you will go on to complete a Level 2 Apprenticeship whilst working and earning!  You might also like to consider training at the National Stud based in Newmarket, to learn how to look after mares and foals, if you want to work in the Thoroughbred breeding industry. Finally, you can also train at the Scottish Racing Academy, which offer a range of courses based on your experience with horses, for those who live in Scotland and other areas in the north of England.

Correct saddle is essential for the horse’s comfort and welfare

A correctly fitting saddle is vital for your horse’s well-being, comfort and safety. Horses are constantly changing shape whether that’s due to fitness levels or a change in condition. These changes however subtle will alter the fit of the saddle. A poorly fitting saddle can result in poor performance, a change in behaviour and even cause pain. An out of balance saddle will also affect the rider’s position and confidence. To ensure the best possible fit, it’s important to have your saddle checked at least every six months by a Society of Master Saddlers’ (SMS) Qualified Saddle Fitter.

“With the topic of horse welfare and the use of horses in sport and recreational purposes often being discussed, we must safeguard our horses and look for ways to improve standards of care,” explains Society of Master Saddlers’ Master Saddler Helen Reader. Using an SMS Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter as part of your team of professionally qualified experts is key to the welfare of your horse.”

When to call your SMS Registered Qualified Saddle

Call your fitter if you spot any of these signs

  • Saddle slipping or movement.
  • Rubs, lumps or white hairs. Always check your horse after exercise, don’t continue using the tack if any appear.
  • Change in behaviour. If, for example, your horse becomes grumpy when being tacked up or mounted.
  • Drop in performance. Has your horse’s way of going changed? He may no longer be tracking up, have difficulty bending or he has started knocking down or refusing jumps.
  • Altered workload or recovering from an injury. The back will gain/lose condition depending on fitness.

What to expect from a Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter visit

All SMS Registered Qualified Saddle Fitters (SMS QSF) follow a protocol, starting with collecting information about you and your horse.

“The fitter will perform an assessment of your horse, including his conformation,” explains Helen.

Templates will be taken of your horse’s back and he will be trotted up to see how he moves naturally. This is followed by a static fitting of your saddle, if this is good it’s followed by a ridden fitting (dynamic).

“It’s essential for a saddle to be seen when the horse is moving and the rider is on board,” stresses Helen.

This allows the fitter to make further assessments and may mean further alterations need to be made with the static and dynamic fittings repeated until the best possible fit is achieved.

As you are riding give feedback on how the saddle feels and how your horse is going too. Throughout the whole fitting ask any questions you may have – your saddle fitter will be more than happy to answer them.

Why use an SMS Qualified Saddle Fitter?

The title of Saddle Fitter is not a protected title, which means anyone can use them regardless of their qualifications or experience.

All SMS members adhere to a code of conduct, maintain professional standards, are regulated and fully insured. By using a SMS Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter you are making sure that you have a well-trained professional backed up by the Society who are respected worldwide.

An SMS QSF is there to help and guide you through the saddle fitting process with the welfare of the horse at heart. They will have completed in-depth training and gained practical experience over a minimum of three years before sitting their examination to gain the globally respected City & Guilds qualification.

Once qualified they must attend a refresher course every two years and complete a set level of continued professional development (CPD). Also, in the unlikely event that you have a complaint, the SMS has a complaints mediation procedure in place to support both the SMS member and their clients.

Ria made this business experience 5 star! Ria, the editor and content advisor was absolutely amazing to deal with. Her professionalism was outstanding, she could not have been any more helpful, and she was really on top of things...sometimes working outside of office hours to get the job done. We were really satisfied with the results of the ads we placed and would not hesitate to advertise with this periodical again in the future.

I have been dealing with Shane and he is an absolute credit to Colston Media. Listens to what you need and tailors the advertising package to suit your company's requirements. Not too pushy when selling the packages. Which makes you comfortable enough to approach again in future with more advertising needs.
