Dutch Spotted Sheep Society (DSSS) is the official Breed Society in the UK for the breed. It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) governed by a Constitution and has DEFRA, Scot Gov, DEARA and NSA approval. The Charity registration number is 1171992. The Society was formed in 2016, to bring together like-minded breeders and enthusiasts and to provide a professionally run body to organise pedigree registrations, a flock register and to promote the sheep through education, shows and events.

The breed Society was established 135 years ago to primarily “advance and promote agriculture by improving the breed of suffolk sheep” and to “promote improvement of the breed of Suffolk sheep”. In essence, these noble aims remain the same and following its formation in Stowmarket on the 8th January 1886, the breed quickly spread throughout the UK and Ireland.
Members receive a yearly journal and a quarterly newsletter to keep them up to date with Society activities, as well as discounted advertising rates. There are various events hosted each year such as showing workshops, herd visits and the AGM at which everyone is welcome, giving the membership a great opportunity to make contacts and keep in touch!
The Society represents the interests of Southdown breeders in the UK and provides registration and marketing services to breeders across the country.
The Southdown is the oldest of the terminal sire breeds in the UK and as the name suggests originates from the native sheep which have roamed the South Downs in the South of England for many hundreds of years.
